Surmodics has expanded its medical device coating capabilities in Galway, widening access to its Performance Coatings and coating services for manufacturers across Ireland and Europe. The facility now includes dedicated cleanroom environments and brings the company's nearly 50 years of coating experience closer to one of the world's leading medical technology hubs.

Detailed in the announcement, Surmodics is a Minnesota-headquartered coatings and biomaterials specialist listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker SRDX. Customers can engage the Ireland site for coating feasibility, process development, coating services and analytical testing alongside technical teams focused on device materials and performance requirements.

The structural driver behind the expansion is Ireland's concentration of medical device manufacturers and technology innovators, pushing coating suppliers to locate technical and manufacturing support directly alongside customer development and production teams rather than serving the region remotely.

"Ireland is home to a significant concentration of medical device manufacturers and technology innovators, making it an important market for Surmodics and our customers," said Damien Kilcommons, Vice President of Site Operation at the Ireland facility. "By establishing dedicated coating capabilities in Ireland, we can work more closely with customers in the region and bring decades of coating science, process expertise and technical support closer to their development and manufacturing teams."

Surmodics' coating portfolio includes hydrophilic, hemocompatible, antimicrobial and drug delivery technologies, offered through both UV and thermal-cure platforms depending on device substrate, geometry and performance requirements. Its Analytical Testing Services evaluate factors such as lubricity, durability, particulate generation and surface characteristics, either alongside coating programmes or as a standalone service.

"Our commitment towards maintaining our global leadership in coatings and biomaterials brings together a differentiated set of capabilities that can support customers across the development continuum," said Charlie Olson, Senior Vice President and President, Medical Device Coatings at Surmodics.

Surmodics is headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker SRDX, reporting trailing 12-month revenue of $126.1 million (approximately €105.9 million) and a net loss of $11.5 million (approximately €9.7 million). The company already operates Irish subsidiaries including Creagh Medical and Vetex Medical.

For the sector, the Galway expansion reflects growing demand among global coatings and biomaterials suppliers to locate technical support close to Ireland's medical device manufacturing base, shortening development cycles for customers moving from feasibility work through commercial-scale production.
